TRANSMISSION

This project begins with the notion that the building is a stage. A stage to practice and hone a craft that has been around since the beginning of time.    It is through the act of performing that we still have music today, so without performance we would have no music.
The SoundLAB is a school that holds music at the core of its entire curriculum. This building responds with an extensive variety of spaces both conventional and experimental. Addressing issues such as scale, personality traits, public or private, fixed or mobile and environmental phenomena such as changing tides. As students become more adept at using their instruments to create different sounds, opportunities to reshape the environments with which they create their music become present.

This toddler bed was commissioned with the clients’ interest in creating a unique and comfortable place for their little one to sleep. Their desire was for a bed with high walls, solid instead of slatted, low and partially open, dark and natural. Our response, in an effort to provide a framework for processing these pragmatic and aesthetic concerns, was to explore an interplay of conceptual dualities: dark and light, hard and soft, thick and thin, solid and void, analog and digital. At its core, the project is a simple expression of the convergence between overtly additive and subtractive processes, the building up of many layers of material meeting the excavation of many layers material. The relationships registered in the final product are revealed through the juxtaposition between that which has been robotically milled, and that which has not. All planar/un-milled surfaces were finished with a water based onyx stain. All milled surfaces were finished with a water based poly-acrylic.

The sectional relationship of where the mass pike cuts through Back Bay and  has been a recent fascination.  Not only does it represent a visible void within the urban fabric by disrupting the strong street wall condition along Mass Ave. but it also divides Newbury St. from Boylston St.  Calling out this void as well as conceiving the city as a continuous landscape were the two initial goals of this site model.

Overlap, juxtapose, interconnect and engage its users, both visually and socially. Juxtaposed program adjacencies are used as a means to relate often disparate functions together to enrich the user experience.

As a means to evaluate, a qualitative (visual) and quantitative (data driven) methodology is to be devised and implemented as a driving force in not only determining speculative inquires, but also assessing the programmatic needs of the site.

Museum:

A depository for collecting and displaying objects having scientific, historical or artistic value.

What does it mean to collect or display?

Who decides what’s culturally significant?

These images (above and below) are looking at spatial conditions, and how one type of program could  influence the other.  Issues of adjacency are speculative at the moment as program is contingent with site.  But a strong sectional relationship is to be focused on.

Taking your final iteration of your section-montages and collages as a starting point as well as any emerging theme or idea these collages have engendered, develop an exhaustive visual list that you feel represents your current thoughts and feelings about your emerging thesis idea. You should also consider the work of other architects and artists that related to your ideas. You are creating a type of catalog with as many images as possible.  This process should also feed the revision of your idea map.
