LaN|FLIGHT 2010

PART TWO

More pictures and some-what vague descriptions.

Our day starts with a whole lot of video conferencing.  We took a virtual tour of the Fab Lab in Medellin, Columbia.  Then we talked to the folks at Architecture For Humanity who were stationed in Haiti helping make sense of what to do next.  Interesting to note that what they thought was the biggest architectural challenge wasn’t housing, but connections.  They lacked the technology/materials to make proper material connections, so instead builders would improvise, which in an earthquake usually wasn’t substantial enough take the seismic load.

A quick tour of the ongoing construction at the Isabella Stewart Gardener Museum (Burt Hill/Renzo Piano Building Workshop)

And to round out the day, talk with Kennedy & Violich Archtects (KVA) on their current exploits in digital design/fabrication.

British Art Museum

This was as far as I made it into the museum, so maybe next time Mr. Kahn.

However, main focus of New Haven was Erwin Hauer and Enrique Rosado, the two partners that make up EHR Associates.  We were treated with an extremely extensive look at how they conceive and produce their work.

First, we started at their workshop.

the biggest cnc i've ever seen

CNC!

After an extensive look at how EHR makes their signature continuous surfaces and how they have transitioned from from analog to digital design and fabrication we went to where Erwin’s Studio was to learn more about how he conceives the shapes that he does.

Also briefly saw the Yale School of Architecture.
